PM-Craft Learning Approach

It starts with a blueprint

Developing professional capability begins with understanding what makes someone effective in their role. By breaking capability down into four interconnected foundations — knowledge, skills, experience, and attitudes & attributes — we can better recognise, understand and categorise the different elements that comprise professional competence, how they influence one another, and where development may be needed.

Understand what matters. Learn how it works. Apply it in practice.

This categorisation provides the starting point for a more detailed examination — or, as we say in project management, ‘decomposition’ — of the individual qualities and competencies we believe effective project professionals require, which we explore in the next section.

EDIP-R — Learning by Doing, Improving Through Reflection

Professional capability develops progressively: through understanding, observation, guided application, independent practice and reflection. Just as individual tiles combine to form meaningful words, the five stages of EDIP-R combine to build capability.

Training, Mentoring & Coaching

Different Approaches. Complementary Strengths.

Developing professional capability requires more than a single approach to learning. Knowledge must be acquired, skills developed, experience gained, and the confidence and judgement to apply them cultivated.

At PM-Craft, we recognise that different development needs call for different methods. Training, mentoring and coaching each play a distinct but complementary role in helping individuals develop their professional capabilities.

Our classroom training establishes the foundations through structured learning and practical application. Mentoring provides ongoing, personalised guidance and development, drawing upon the experience of seasoned professionals. Coaching offers flexible, responsive support, helping individuals and teams navigate challenges, explore alternatives and develop their own solutions.

Together, these approaches extend professional development beyond the classroom, supporting individuals as they develop the independence, confidence and judgement of accomplished practitioners.

TRAINING

Building Knowledge & Skills

Training is a structured, instructor-led approach to developing knowledge and practical skills through defined learning objectives, explanations, demonstrations and exercises.

At PM-Craft, our classroom courses combine sound theoretical foundations with practical application, encouraging participants to understand not only how techniques work, but why and when to use them.

MENTORING

Developing the Professional

Mentoring is an ongoing developmental relationship in which an experienced professional shares knowledge, experience, perspectives and guidance to support another individual’s longer-term growth.

At PM-Craft, mentoring takes a structured, one-to-one approach, centred on individual development objectives, regular conversations, reflection and constructive challenge.

The emphasis is on developing professional maturity, confidence and the judgement needed to navigate increasingly complex situations independently.

COACHING

Unlocking Potential

Coaching is a collaborative, challenge-focused approach that helps individuals and teams examine situations, explore alternatives, challenge assumptions and develop their own solutions.

At PM-Craft, coaching is flexible and responsive, providing support when emerging challenges, decisions or opportunities create a need for additional perspective.

Through thoughtful questioning, constructive feedback and guided reflection, coaching strengthens independent thinking, decision-making and professional effectiveness.

Clarifying the Differences

TRAINING

What do I need to know, and how do I do it?

Focus: Knowledge and skills.·Method: Structured instruction, demonstration and practical exercises.

MENTORING

How can I develop as a professional?

Focus: Long-term professional development.·Method: Experience-sharing, guidance, reflection and ongoing support.

COACHING

How can I approach this challenge more effectively?

Focus: Thinking, performance and problem-solving.·Method: Questioning, constructive challenge, exploration and feedback.

An Important Distinction

The three methods are distinct but complementary, without absolute boundaries. Training is generally structured around defined learning outcomes. Mentoring typically supports broader, longer-term professional development through guidance and shared experience. Coaching focuses on developing independent thinking, helping individuals or groups explore and respond to specific challenges.

Our preferred delivery model: training as structured, predominantly classroom-based group learning; mentoring as planned, predominantly one-to-one professional development; and coaching as flexible, responsive, opportunity-driven individual or small-group support.

Coaching may be structured and ongoing. Mentoring may incorporate informal discussions and coaching techniques. The methods can overlap where this benefits the learner.

CAPABILITY · CONFIDENCE · JUDGEMENT · INDEPENDENCE

Training gives people the tools. Mentoring helps them develop their craft. Coaching helps them find their own way forward.

At PM-Craft, these approaches are not isolated services or rigid stages of development. They complement and reinforce one another, providing the right kind of support at the right time. Our ultimate objective is to develop professionals who possess not only the knowledge and skills to perform their roles, but also the confidence, experience and judgement to succeed independently.

We don’t just teach project management. We help people develop the knowledge, skills, experience and mindset to practise it with confidence.
